Trump’s Provocative Remarks on Canada Spark Election Responses

On election day, Canadians woke up to a surprising tweet from U.S. President Donald Trump. He suggested, “Let’s make Canada the 51st state!” He called Canada a “beautiful land,” and said the border between Canada and the U.S. is just an “old line.”

Pierre Poilievre, leader of Canada’s Conservative Party, quickly responded, telling Trump to stay out of Canadian elections. He insisted that only Canadians should decide the country’s future. Poilievre stressed that Canada will always be proud and independent, saying, “We will NEVER be the 51st state.” He asked Canadians to vote for change and promised to make Canada stronger and more self-reliant.

Former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney also replied in a video, stating, “This is Canada, and we decide what happens here.” Trump has a history of claiming Canada shouldn’t be independent. He has even raised tariffs on Canadian goods, making the economy tougher for many Canadians.

Strangely, Trump’s remarks seemed to help the Liberal Party get more votes in the 2025 elections and weakened the Conservative Party. Some people think Trump’s comments support Poilievre, who sometimes gets compared to the former president and has faced criticism for it.

It looks like Trump isn’t going to stop talking about Canada soon. The next government will have to deal with Trump, who is not only impacting Canada’s economy with tariffs but is also keeping a close eye on Canada.
