Tensions between India and Pakistan have increased after a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir that killed 26 people, including two tourists. Following this attack, rumors started floating that Pakistan Army Chief General Syed Asim Munir is “missing.” Some reports say he could be hiding in a bunker in Rawalpindi, while others claim he may have left the country.
On social media, the hashtag #MunirOut has become popular as people share the latest gossip about his situation. Many are questioning why there has been no clear statement about him and what he is doing. Despite these whispers, a photo was shared by the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office showing General Munir with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at a recent event, dated April 26, 2025. This seems to be an attempt to calm the rumors and show that he is still active.
The rising tensions follow the Pahalgam attack, which led India to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty—an agreement concerning shared rivers. Pakistan called this action illegal. Indian intelligence suggests there were connections between the attackers and Pakistan, leading to increased scrutiny.
Just two days before the attack, General Munir made statements calling Kashmir Pakistan’s “jugular vein,” emphasizing its importance. He also reaffirmed the idea of the “two-nation theory,” explaining that Pakistan and India are fundamentally different in many ways.
Reports indicate that the tragic Pahalgam attack involved horrifying acts, where victims were forced to recite Islamic prayers at gunpoint. Investigations are looking into whether Munir’s strong words may have encouraged extremist groups to commit such acts, especially with US Vice President JD Vance visiting the area at that time.
