On Friday, two big earthquakes shook central Myanmar. The first was a 7.7 magnitude and the second was a 6.4. The tremors were so strong that people in nearby countries like Thailand and India could feel them. In Bangkok, a swimming pool on a tall building overflowed, looking like a waterfall!

In Myanmar’s city of Monywa, where the earthquakes began, a 30-storey building that was being built collapsed, trapping 43 workers inside. We don’t know yet how many people were hurt or how much damage was done, but officials are checking.

Although the earthquakes were powerful, no immediate reports of damage or injuries came from Myanmar itself. This is significant because Myanmar is already facing challenges from civil conflict.

In India, the strong shaking was felt in the northeastern states such as Manipur and Meghalaya. According to reports, the first earthquake, which measured 7.2, struck at around 11:50 AM, and another one of 7.0 followed at 12:02 PM. Fortunately, there were no immediate reports of damage in Manipur, where people felt the ground shake fiercely.

Residents in Manipur’s capital, Imphal, were startled and rushed to get outside. One local said, “We felt the first earthquake as the water in our pond was shaking.” Authorities are still keeping a close watch on the situation to see what might happen next.
