A new law to improve how India manages its ports was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Friday by Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. This new law, called “The Indian Ports Bill, 2025,” aims to make things better for ports and those who use them. It plans to create better ways to handle problems that arise at ports, such as pollution and emergencies. The bill also wants to manage more effectively the ports that are not major ones by giving power to State Maritime Boards.

The law focuses on making sure ports work well, are safe, and follow international rules. It aims to protect the environment around the ports and develop better ways to solve disputes related to ports. However, some people are concerned about this bill. K Radhakrishnan from CPIM believes the bill gives too much power to the central government and takes power away from state governments. Sougata Ray from TMC pointed out that the old Indian Ports Act of 1908 is not enough for the new private ports that have appeared over time. He worries that the new dispute resolution system could hurt workers’ rights.
