NATO’s Secretary-General, Mark Rutte, warned Russia that the alliance will always protect Poland and any other member country. He said that if Russia attacks, the response would be “devastating.” Rutte spoke in Warsaw, Poland, alongside Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Tusk emphasized that it’s important to be ready for any outcome from talks between Russia and the United States regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Countries in NATO, especially Poland and the Baltic states, are worried that these talks might lead to an agreement that benefits Russia. They are afraid this could allow Russian President Vladimir Putin to strengthen his military and pose a threat to neighboring countries.
Rutte clearly stated that no one should think they could attack Poland or any NATO ally without facing severe consequences. “If anyone thinks they can attack us, they will face the full strength of our strong alliance. Putin needs to understand this,” he said.
Rutte’s warning comes as former President Donald Trump is re-entering politics, which has made Europe reconsider how it relies on the U.S. for security. Some European countries are planning to invest more in their own defenses. Trump recently mentioned he doesn’t think a peace deal for Ukraine would lead to further attacks from Russia.
Rutte reminded everyone that Russia is still a serious threat to NATO. He noted that Russia is transitioning to a wartime economy, which will boost its military forces and capabilities.
