Ganesh Mohan: Mental Clarity, Grit & Gratitude from Everest Climb

In today’s fast-paced world, staying clear-headed can seem hard. But for Ganesh Mohan, the Managing Director of Bajaj Finserv AMC, it’s essential. He finds this clarity not only in board meetings but also when trekking up to 4,000 meters at Everest Base Camp.

In this Mind Over Money edition, Mohan shares his adventure that taught him important lessons about strength, gratitude, and humility. Every step he took was a reminder to appreciate life, and every meal—even simple dal and rice—felt like a treat.

                                                                                 Q) How do you keep your mind strong while leading a busy company?

                                                                               A) Balancing different parts of life is key for any leader. It involves diving into details while also understanding the big picture. You should set aside time for urgent tasks and long-term plans, as well as knowing when to step back and recharge. In the fast-changing world of finance, it’s all about organizing your thoughts and actions. If something worries me, I ask myself if it will matter in five years, and often, it helps me see things more clearly.

                                                                              Q) How does your interest in classical music help you stay calm?

                                                                                  A) Indian classical music, whether Hindustani or Carnatic, really helps our minds grow. It teaches patience, discipline, and the need for regular practice. All of this builds mental strength that helps in everyday life.

                                                                                Q) How did climbing to Everest Base Camp test your mental strength?

                                                                                   A) The trek taught me about toughness and being thankful. It’s all about pushing your limits with hard training and walking long distances. But the mountain isn’t something you conquer; you learn to respect and navigate it. At high altitudes, you realize how simple things, like a bowl of dal and rice, can mean so much. You learn to adapt to tough situations with a positive attitude, much like the smiling Sherpas who assist climbers.

                                                                                Q) What tips do you have for professionals to keep their minds healthy?

                                                                                A) Balancing life is crucial. We all have four parts to our lives: physical, mental, financial, and spiritual. Everyone should think about how they are improving each part regularly.

                                                                                Q) Do you practice mindfulness? What helps you recharge?

                                                                                A) Yes, I do! Mindfulness means fully focusing on what I’m doing. I avoid distractions and really get into my work. I enjoy solving puzzles like Sudoku and crosswords and I run several times a week.

                                                                               Q) Why should leaders model good mental habits?

                                                                                  A) People watch what you do more than they listen to what you say. Post-COVID, mental health is important, and leaders need to set a good example. Fun and laughter create strong teams, helping everyone face challenges together.
