A teacher at the National Institute of Technology-Calicut (NIT-Calicut) is in the spotlight after being arrested for praising Nathuram Godse, the person who assassinated Mahatma Gandhi. Despite this controversy, Dr. Shaija A has been chosen to be the new Dean of the Planning and Development Department, starting on March 7.

Dr. Shaija was arrested in February last year because of a social media post where she said she was proud of Godse for killing Gandhi. Many groups, including the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), and the Youth Congress, found her post very offensive and filed complaints against her.

Because of her appointment, some political parties are now protesting. The DYFI has announced plans for a protest march at the institute to show their opposition.

In the Director’s announcement regarding her new role, Dr. Shaija will work with the current Dean, Dr. Priya Chandran, for a smooth handover. She will stay in this position for two years or until further notice.

The police have charged Dr. Shaija with a law that deals with causing riots. She was questioned at her home in Chathamangalam, but later the court gave her bail, allowing her to stay out of jail.
