West Bengal Teacher Eligibility List Errors: Updates and Reactions

On Friday, the West Bengal School Service Commission (WBSSC) revealed problems with a list of over 15,000 teachers who are eligible for jobs. They found mistakes, like names missing and some added by accident. The Commission is quickly fixing these errors and asked everyone to remember that most deserving teachers are on the list.

A top official told PTI that around 16,000 eligible teachers who have no problems in their records will get their salaries. They admitted that some mistakes happened when they were creating the list because they were working really fast since April 21. The official stated, “With so many names to handle, some errors are expected, but we are correcting them. We will share a new list soon with all the right names.”

When asked about Babita Sarkar, a teacher from North Bengal whose job was removed along with others hired in 2016, the official said she was on the original list but is now removed. Babita was hired back in 2021 after a court case but lost her job again after a new court order in May 2023.

Babita criticized the WBSSC, saying their decision was confusing and they had lost people’s trust. Anamika Roy, another teacher who had gotten her job in 2016 but lost it due to a Supreme Court decision, is still on the WBSSC’s list of eligible teachers.

The list was released on Wednesday, leading some protesting teachers to return to their jobs, but others are still protesting. Dhritish Mondal, a leader in the teachers’ group, mentioned that about 300 names of eligible teachers were missing from the lists given to local offices. He said the WBSSC promised to fix these issues.

The official from WBSSC explained that if 200 to 250 teachers were wrongly left out of 15,000, it wasn’t too many, but still a mistake that needs correction. They are also preparing to present their case to the court carefully.

On Friday, some teachers who had protested outside the WBSSC office chose to end their demonstration for now and return to work. “We are stopping our protest at the WBSSC office but will continue at Sahid Minar in Kolkata,” Mondal said.

On April 3, the Supreme Court canceled all jobs from the 2016 teacher recruitment due to major issues, affecting 25,753 staff positions. However, teachers without problems were allowed to keep their jobs until the end of the year. These teachers still want job security until they can retire.
