The Supreme Court of India looked at a case involving Rahul Gandhi’s comments about Vinayak Savarkar on April 25. The court said Gandhi’s remarks were careless and irresponsible. They warned him to be careful with what he says in the future, suggesting they might take action if he doesn’t.
During the court session, Abhishek Singhvi, Gandhi’s lawyer, was reminded that even Mahatma Gandhi used respectful language when speaking to British officials.
The Supreme Court decided to pause a previous order from the Allahabad High Court that did not cancel the summons asking Rahul Gandhi to appear in court for this defamation case. Rahul Gandhi had previously asked the Supreme Court to review the high court’s decision.
This defamation case started from comments Gandhi made about Savarkar on November 17, 2022, during a rally in Akola, Maharashtra. Earlier, on April 4, the high court stated that Gandhi could file a revision petition in a different court, making it unnecessary for the high court to get involved at this point.
Rahul Gandhi, who is the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, opposed a lower court’s decision that summoned him to appear. The complaint was filed by Advocate Nripendra Pandey, alleging that Gandhi intentionally insulted Savarkar during the rally. The complaint also claimed that Gandhi’s comments were part of a plan to defame Savarkar.
