Supreme Court Upholds Bail for Bikram Singh Majithia in Drug Case

In a recent decision, the Supreme Court of India said “no” to the Punjab government’s request to cancel the bail of Bikram Singh Majithia, a leader from the Shiromani Akali Dal party. He got bail for a drugs-related case back in August 2022.

The Supreme Court justices, J K Maheswari and Aravind Kumar, explained that since Majithia has been cooperating with the investigation and it has been over two years since he was granted bail, they didn’t want to interfere at this time. They also reminded both sides not to talk to the media about the case anymore.

Majithia has to file a signed promise within a week, saying he will not speak to the press about the case. The court warned him not to influence any witnesses or try to affect the trial. If he breaks this promise, he could lose his bail.

The case against Majithia started in 2018 when the Special Task Force investigated a drug racket in Punjab. He spent around five months in jail before getting bail. The High Court believed there were good reasons to think he might not be guilty. They also said it wouldn’t be helpful to keep him in jail if the trial would take a long time to start and finish.

Majithia’s case continues as the legal process goes ahead.
