Uber has removed a driver from its platform after he sent inappropriate messages to a woman passenger after a trip. This happened in Kerala when a passenger named Smriti Kannan shared her experience on social media.
Smriti posted screenshots of the driver’s messages on X. She wanted to know how the driver got her phone number since Uber is supposed to keep that private. Normally, Uber uses a special system that hides both drivers’ and passengers’ phone numbers to protect their privacy.
Smriti was upset, saying, “WHAT THE F Uber India, how bad are your privacy settings? An Uber driver messaged me on WhatsApp and asked me creepy questions. How safe are women???” She had taken a ride with the driver in Kochi and started receiving strange messages from him after the trip ended.
The driver, named Muhammed Mishal, began texting Smriti asking if she remembered him. Initially, she said she didn’t, but the driver reminded her that he had picked her up and taken her to a nail salon. Smriti then asked, “Why are you messaging me?” To which the driver replied with a weird question, “Can you just say which spray are you using?” Smriti decided to block him after that.
This incident raised serious concerns about passenger privacy because drivers should not contact passengers after the ride. Uber confirmed that the driver got Smriti’s number through a payment app (UPI), which she used to pay for the ride, instead of through the Uber app itself. Since the driver broke Uber’s rules, they banned him from using their service.
