Apple announced on Tuesday that it has renamed the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America on its maps. This change came after a decision by President Donald Trump, which was made official by the US Geographic Names Information System (GNIS).
Last month, Google had also said it would make the same change once it was listed officially. Now, Apple is updating US maps first before going global, according to Bloomberg.
Google began this change on Sunday. It’s important to note that people in the US will see “Gulf of America,” while those in Mexico will still see “Gulf of Mexico.” Users from other countries will see both names.
The US GNIS confirmed the name change late on Sunday. Microsoft has also updated its Bing maps.
President Trump had asked for the name change shortly after taking office, saying that the body of water that borders the southern US, Mexico, and Cuba should have a new name.
Aside from the Gulf of America, Trump also mentioned that Denali in Alaska would be renamed back to Mount McKinley. Former President Obama had changed it to Denali in 2015. In December, Trump expressed that he wanted to restore the name Mount McKinley because he believed McKinley deserved to be recognized.
Until Tuesday, both Google and Apple Maps showed the name Denali, but Google is expected to change it quickly.
