NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received calls from several world leaders on Thursday, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II. They all condemned a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, India, and pledged to work together to combat terrorism.
Netanyahu expressed his support for India and firmly condemned the attack that targeted innocent people. He shared his sympathy for the victims’ families. Modi responded by emphasizing India’s determination to punish those responsible for the attack.
On April 22, terrorists killed 26 tourists in a beautiful area near Pahalgam in Jammu and Kashmir, marking one of the worst attacks in the region in almost 20 years. In response to this violence, India has taken steps against Pakistan, such as suspending a water-sharing agreement and closing a key border crossing.
Japan’s Prime Minister Ishiba also expressed his condolences, stating that there is no justification for terrorism. Both leaders agreed that fighting against terrorism is vital for democratic nations.
King Abdullah of Jordan condemned the attack, too, expressing his sorrow for the victims and clearly stating that terrorism should never be justified. Modi thanked him for his support and reiterated India’s commitment to seek justice.
Other leaders, including Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and Italy’s Prime Minister Georgia Meloni, also reached out to Modi to express their support against terrorism. Sisi stated that Egypt stands with India in this fight, while Meloni condemned the attack and promised Italy’s full cooperation in countering terrorism.
Condemnations have poured in from around the world, including messages from Iraq and Qatar. Iraq’s foreign ministry denounced the “terrible attack” and showed solidarity with India, while Qatar firmly rejected violence and terrorism. The League of Arab States in New Delhi also expressed its condolences to the victims and their families, wishing a swift recovery for the injured.
