Plans are ready for the ‘Maghi Purnima Snan’ happening on Wednesday, February 12. To avoid last week’s long traffic jams that stranded people for over 30 hours, the whole Maha Kumbh area will be a ‘no vehicle zone’ starting from 4 am on February 11. This is to make it easier for thousands of devotees heading to Prayagraj to take their holy bath.
On Monday, big traffic jams stretched for 300 kilometers, and police had to tell some visitors to turn back. Uttar Pradesh’s top police chief, Prashant Kumar, said the jams weren’t due to bad planning but because so many people are coming to Maha Kumbh. More than 40 crore devotees have already taken a dip in the sacred river since the festival started on January 13, with even more arriving every day.
To manage the crowd for the ‘Maghi Purnima Snan’, authorities created a traffic plan. The ‘no vehicle zone’ will also apply in Prayagraj city after 5 pm on February 11. Only emergency vehicles and essential services will be allowed in. Devotees arriving from outside will have to park their vehicles in designated parking lots. These traffic restrictions will remain until all devotees leave the Mela area on February 12. Moreover, drop-offs for ‘Kalpvasi’ vehicles will also be restricted.
