India will miss the deadline to submit its updated climate action plan, which is supposed to be done by February under the UN Paris Agreement. This plan is important because it helps countries work together to control global warming and keep temperature rise below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
An official from the Indian government, who asked to stay anonymous, shared that India still hasn’t finished studying how its emissions will change and what steps it needs to take. They mentioned that it’s unlikely India will get this plan ready on time.
While India is working hard to finish these studies, they haven’t set a specific deadline for themselves. It’s worth noting that only a few countries, including Brazil, Britain, and New Zealand, have submitted their updated climate plans. China, one of the biggest polluters in the world, has not submitted its plan either.
The United States, under President Joe Biden, completed their submission in December, but former President Donald Trump later left the Paris Agreement, which affected U.S. climate efforts.
