The AIMIM party contested in only two areas—Okhla and Mustafabad—in the Delhi assembly elections and got a lot of votes. They affected how well both the Congress party and the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) did in these places. This is the third time in a row that Congress has not led in any of the 70 assembly seats in Delhi.
In Okhla, AAP’s Amanatullah Khan won with 65,304 votes, while BJP’s Manish Chaudhary came second. AIMIM’s Shifa Ur Rehman Khan got 39,558 votes, doing better than Congress’s Ariba Khan, who came fourth.
In Mustafabad, BJP’s Mohan Singh Bisht won with 85,215 votes. AAP’s Adeel Ahmad Khan lost by 17,578 votes, and AIMIM’s Tahir Hussain got 33,474 votes, beating Congress’s Ali Mehdi.
Both AIMIM candidates are accused of being involved in the 2020 Delhi riots and are in jail. They got special permission to campaign and held several roadshows with their leader, Asaduddin Owaisi.
The riots led to over 50 deaths, and many were injured. Following the election results, Congress leaders Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi expressed their gratitude for votes and said they would keep working for the people of Delhi. They acknowledged that voters wanted change and promised to stay connected with their concerns.
