Vote counting for Delhi’s 70 assembly seats started safely at 19 locations in the city this Saturday. The Chief Electoral Officer of Delhi, Alice Vaz, said that 5,000 trained staff members, including supervisors and assistants, were appointed to help with the counting.
During the election, the BJP, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, criticized the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for issues like pollution in the Yamuna River. Meanwhile, AAP promoted its achievements in education and healthcare over the past eleven years. Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi also spoke against AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal at his rallies before the election.
Key battles included New Delhi, where Arvind Kejriwal is running against Congress’s Sandeep Dikshit and BJP’s Parvesh Verma. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi is competing against BJP’s Ramesh Bidhuri and Congress’s Alka Lamba. The election campaign featured intense debates among the three parties.
According to election rules, postal ballots will be counted first, followed by electronic voting machine (EVM) votes about half an hour later. After that, postal votes and EVM votes will be counted at the same time. To make the process more transparent, VVPAT (voter verifiable paper audit trail) slips from five randomly chosen polling stations in each assembly area will be checked against the EVM results. There are about 1.55 crore eligible voters in Delhi, with a voter turnout of 60.54 percent in the February 5 election.
