Today is a big day for Delhi! At 8 am, people will start counting the votes for the 70 assembly seats to see who will run the city for the next five years. It’s expected that we might see some trends by 10 am and final results by 1 pm. The main competitors are the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is currently in charge, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which has not been in power since 1998. The Congress party is also in the race and could play a role in the results.

Voting has ended, and more than 60.5% of Delhi’s 15.6 million eligible voters cast their votes on February 5th. AAP and Congress both nominated candidates for all 70 seats. The BJP competed for 68 seats and shared two with its allies, Janata Dal (United) and Loktantrik Janshakti Party.

In total, there were 699 candidates, including 603 men, 95 women, and one candidate from a third-gender group.

The votes are safely kept in strong rooms across Delhi, protected by tight security.

Exit Polls and Predictions for Delhi

Exit polls show that the race might be very close, with BJP possibly having a slight edge. However, none of the parties are relying too much on these predictions. AAP leader Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “Exit polls often underestimate AAP. I’ve spoken to many people who believe AAP will win.” AAP focused on its achievements in health, education, and providing free or low-cost services like water, power, and bus rides.

On the other hand, BJP leader Virendra Sachdeva is very optimistic, saying, “Our victory will be even better than what exit polls predict.” BJP promises to continue current welfare programs and introduce new ones, showing a commitment to development as part of a “double-engine government.”

Meanwhile, Congress president Devender Yadav believes that their hard work at the grassroots level will turn into votes. They are highlighting the development that took place when Sheila Dikshit was Chief Minister from 1998 to 2013.

Looking Back at Past Elections

In 2013, AAP formed a minority government with Congress support after winning 28 seats, but it lasted only 49 days. In 2015, AAP had a huge win, grabbing 67 seats and repeating that success in 2020 with 62 seats, while the BJP only got 8. Congress has struggled in the last two elections, with no wins.
