On Thursday, the Supreme Court decided to protect workers at Discovery Communications India who said they were being threatened by fans of a popular figure called Asaram Bapu. This came after the release of a documentary series called “Cult of Fear: Asaram Bapu.”

A group of judges, led by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, told the Indian government and several state governments—including Maharashtra, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu—to make sure the Discovery team is safe. They asked these governments to help so that the workers can go about their jobs without fear.

The court is expected to check back on this issue in early March 2025. They asked police to keep an eye on the situation and ensure the workforce can work safely at their offices.

A lawyer for the Discovery team shared that employees were feeling scared, especially after a big group tried to enter their office in Mumbai without permission. It was said that while police broke up that group, no one was punished for the threats.

The Discovery team mentioned in their request to the court that they continue to face threats from Asaram’s followers, which has made them feel unsafe. Due to this fear, Discovery has been allowing employees to work from home for their safety.
