Michael W. Banks, the chief of the United States Border Patrol, shared a video showing Indian people being taken onto a deportation plane in handcuffs and leg restraints. He stated that the Border Patrol, along with other groups, successfully returned illegal immigrants to India. This flight was the farthest deportation yet, using a military plane.
The U.S. military C-17 aircraft, carrying 104 Indians who were in the U.S. illegally, landed in Amritsar, India, on Wednesday. This was the first time under President Trump’s administration that such deportations to India happened.
The plane left from San Antonio, Texas, and arrived at Shri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport in Amritsar. Among those deported, 30 were from Punjab, 33 from Haryana, 33 from Gujarat, three from Maharashtra, three from Uttar Pradesh, and two from Chandigarh.
Since Trump became president on January 20, the U.S. government increased deportations, even using military planes to send people back to Guatemala, Peru, and Honduras. Now, India is one of the farthest places to send deported immigrants. The Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has said that India will help bring back its people who are staying illegally in the U.S. or other countries.
