The United States has told its citizens not to travel to Jammu and Kashmir after a terrible terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people, mostly tourists. The U.S. government warns that attacks and violence can happen at any time in this area.
Visitors are advised to avoid Jammu and Kashmir, except for the eastern region of Ladakh and its capital, Leh. Violence can occur near the India-Pakistan border and in popular tourist spots like Srinagar, Gulmarg, and Pahalgam. The Indian government has also restricted tourists from entering certain dangerous areas near the border. U.S. officials are not allowed to visit Jammu and Kashmir.
In the recent Pahalgam attack, a group of terrorists opened fire, killing mainly tourists, making it the worst attack in the region since 2019’s Pulwama strike. The Resistance Front, a group linked to the banned organization Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the attack.
U.S. President Donald Trump spoke to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and strongly condemned the attack, expressing full support for India in seeking justice.
In response to the attack, India has taken significant actions against Pakistan, including pausing the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 and reducing diplomatic ties. The treaty covers how India and Pakistan share water from rivers, with India receiving 20% and Pakistan getting 80% of the water from the Indus River System.
