On Tuesday, a terrible mass shooting took place at an adult education center in Orebro, Sweden, killing at least 11 people and injuring many more. This event is one of the deadliest shootings in Sweden’s history.
Swedish police announced on Wednesday that they found no evidence that the shooter had any ideological reasons for the attack. They warned the public about false information spreading on social media. The school, Risbergska, where the shooting occurred, is located in a big town with over 100,000 residents. Many police officers were present, ensuring safety around the school and other nearby locations.
A memorial with candles and flowers was set up to honor the victims. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed deep sadness over the incident, calling it a “painful day” for Sweden. King Carl XVI Gustav also shared his condolences. To show respect, flags were flown at half-mast on official buildings in Orebro, the Swedish parliament, and the royal palace in Stockholm.
The police believe the shooter, who is now deceased, acted alone and was not known to them before this incident. They assured that there is no general threat against other schools, including those for immigrants where many students learn Swedish and improve their skills to find jobs.
Sweden is facing a tough battle with gang-related gun violence, having the highest rate of gun crime per person in the European Union. But deadly attacks in schools are rare, with only ten people killed in such incidents from 2010 to 2022.
