The BJP party, which previously criticized free handouts known as “revdi culture,” is now offering many money-saving programs in states like Delhi and Maharashtra. One of their successful programs is called the ‘Ladli Behna’ scheme for women, which many believe helped them win elections. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman explained that BJP only promises things they think a state can afford.

Freebies in India started back in 1967 during a tough time when people had little food. But they became popular when AAP promised free electricity and water in Delhi in 2013. PM Modi called these free handouts “muft ki revdi,” but now, BJP is also promising things like pensions for women.

BJP’s Freebie Promises in Different States:

– Madhya Pradesh: The ‘Ladli Behna’ scheme aims to help women but is causing the state to take on a lot of debt. This year, they plan to spend ₹34,780 crore on various subsidies and direct cash transfers.

– Haryana: BJP promised a minimum support price for farmers and financial help for women to compete with Congress’s offers of free electricity and medical treatment.

– Maharashtra: After disappointing election results, the BJP has changed its approach and started offering cash benefits and welfare schemes again, like free LPG cylinders for those who need help.

– Delhi: BJP promises to keep free electricity for up to 200 units, pay subsidies on LPG cylinders, increase health insurance for senior citizens, and provide financial help for women.

– Odisha: BJP promises to create jobs, give cash to women, refund money lost in bad investments, and buy rice from farmers at a better price.

Impact on State Economies:
According to a report, many states are spending a lot on these promises, which can hurt their budgets and make it hard to build important things like schools and roads. Some states are already having trouble keeping all their promises, so voters should pay close attention to what each party offers.

So, as we head into another round of elections in 2025, especially in Delhi, it’s important for voters to think carefully about these promises.
