On Monday, the government announced that 13 people were arrested in 2024 for making fake bomb threats to airlines. Last year, there were a total of 728 bomb threats reported, with 714 affecting domestic airlines, according to the civil aviation ministry in a statement to Rajya Sabha.
The Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Murlidhar Mohol, shared that the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) recorded these hoax threats. IndiGo had the most threats, receiving 216, followed by Air India with 179 and Vistara with 153. Other airlines like Akasa Air had 72, SpiceJet received 35, Alliance Air had 26, Air India Express got 19, and Star Air had 14 threats. In total, 14 threats also came from foreign airlines, with Emirates and Air Arabia facing five and three threats, respectively.
To keep everyone safe, BCAS has set strict rules and procedures for handling these threats. Every airport has a Bomb Threat Assessment Committee (BTAC) that looks into each threat and takes the necessary actions. Additionally, BCAS has sent out advice to all aviation partners in the country to improve security and stop any illegal actions against civil aviation.
