The Delhi High Court has given temporary bail until February 4 to Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a former BJP leader and convict in the Unnao rape case, because he needs to have eye surgery. The court’s judges, Yashwant Varma and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar, agreed to pause his prison sentence so he can get cataract surgery at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi. The judges told Sengar he needs to return to prison on February 5.
The court mentioned that Sengar’s operation is planned for February 4, 2025, and they allowed his release this time under conditions similar to those previously set on December 20, 2024. Sengar’s lawyer explained that his surgery could not happen as planned before due to reasons outside of their control. They requested two more days in the hospital for the operation.
Sengar had received temporary bail before for his surgery, but the survivor’s lawyer argued against letting him stay out of jail indefinitely. Sengar is appealing his conviction and sentence from a December 2019 trial court decision. He has asked the court to overturn the guilty verdict. The case involves a minor girl who was said to be kidnapped and raped by Sengar in 2017. The Supreme Court ordered that this case and others related to it be moved to Delhi from a trial court in Uttar Pradesh on August 1, 2019.
