On Sunday, Canada’s Finance Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced that Canada is putting new tariffs on around 3 billion dollars’ worth of products from the U.S. This means there will be extra fees on things like alcohol, household appliances, tools, guns, dairy, fruits, vegetables, and clothing. These tariffs start this Tuesday.
The decision came right after U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a 25% tariff on goods from Canada and Mexico. He also added a 10% duty on products from China because of concerns about drug trafficking.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Canada will fight back with 25% tariffs on 155 billion dollars’ worth of American goods. Chrystia Freeland, who wants to be the next prime minister, stated, “We don’t want this fight, but we will not back down.”
Freeland called the tariffs a bad idea that would hurt American people, as they rely on Canada for many items. Donald Trump acknowledged that these tariffs might be tough for Americans but promised it would all be worth it to make America great again.
Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also announced that Mexico will also impose retaliatory tariffs. She condemned Trump’s comments about Mexico being involved with criminals and suggested better cooperation between the U.S. and Mexico on safety issues.
China is unhappy with the new tariffs and plans to take legal action against the U.S., declaring their strong opposition to the fees imposed on Chinese goods.
