Delhi Police arrested two men, Javed Khan (30) and Shahrukh Ali (29), for running a fake online PhD admission scheme. They both lived in Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh. Javed Khan, who studied computer engineering, led the scam.
A woman wanted to get a PhD and found Javed’s contact on a website called www.literateus.com. She transferred ₹1,80,000 to him for admission and thesis work. When he asked for more money and didn’t give her any receipts, she became suspicious and told the police.
The police started looking into the case after she filed a complaint. They found out that the money went into bank accounts linked to both Javed and Shahrukh. Javed had thrown away his phone, but the police were able to track him down. They finally caught him in Noida while he was at a de-addiction center.
During questioning, Javed said he worked at a company that helped people with online PhD admissions before starting his own website. He had a letter from Glocal University in Saharanpur but it was discovered that this university was involved in a scam and hasn’t been operating since July 2021.
Javed even sent a fake ID from Glocal University to the woman and gave out fake honorary degrees. Shahrukh helped him in this scam and shared the money they made. They found a phone with important messages and fake payment receipts in Shahrukh’s home.
Police revealed that a total of 15 people were cheated through this fake PhD admission scheme. The investigation is continuing.
