The Indian stock market will be open for a special trading session on Saturday, February 1, 2025, while Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presents the Union Budget for 2025-26. Both the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) have announced this in a circular.
Trading Schedule on Budget Day:
– Pre-Market Trading: 9:00 AM to 9:08 AM
– Equity Market Trading: 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM
– Commodity Trading: Until 5:00 PM
Even though trading will take place as usual, February 1, 2025, is a Settlement Holiday. This means that transactions made on January 31 and February 1 will be settled on Monday, February 3, 2025. The T+0 settlement session won’t happen that day.
Why Is the Stock Market Open on Budget Day?
The market is open on this Saturday to let investors react quickly to budget announcements, just like it did on Saturdays in the past for budget announcements in 2020 and 2015. The Union Budget is important because it affects the economy and can make stock prices change.
Since 2017, the Union Budget has been presented on February 1 each year, earlier than before, giving the government more time to carry out new plans. The last big Union Budget was revealed by Sitharaman on July 23, 2024, after the Lok Sabha elections. Before that, a smaller interim budget was shared on February 1, 2024.
The Union Budget is a big deal for the stock market because it can change investment attitudes and economic direction. People will be watching key sectors like infrastructure, banking, manufacturing, and healthcare closely, as they might see significant changes in stock prices.
