Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer Harish Kumar Gupta will become the new director general of police (DGP) for Andhra Pradesh on Friday. He is taking over from DGP Ch Dwaraka Tirumala Rao, who is retiring because he has reached the age limit.

Gupta, who was born in 1992, is currently the director general of vigilance and enforcement. He will also be in charge of the police forces starting Friday. This isn’t his first time as DGP; he was appointed to this position temporarily on May 6, 2024, because of concerns about fairness in election duties.

Gupta has only seven months of service left before he retires in August. Meanwhile, Rao, who is a 1989 IPS officer, will retire on Friday but will continue to work as the vice-chairman and managing director of the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation for one more year starting February 1.

Rao became the head of the police on June 20, 2024, after a new government took office. A farewell parade will be held for the outgoing DGP on Friday, celebrating his service.
