In Manipur, the state government is getting ready to talk about reversing a 2016 decision that created seven new districts. This will happen in a future meeting, according to a recent joint statement after a meeting on Thursday.

The new districts—Jiribam, Kamjong, Kakching, Tengnoupal, Noney, Pherzawl, and Kangpokpi—were set up by the Congress government back in 2016. The United Naga Council (UNC), which represents Naga tribes in Manipur, strongly opposed this decision, arguing that it was made without consulting the affected communities.

Tripartite talks have been ongoing since 2017 after the UNC agreed to lift a blockade on major highways. There have been 11 rounds of discussions, but they paused for a while. Talks resumed in October last year when the UNC renewed its call to reverse the 2016 decision. The latest talk happened on November 29, 2023.

After the latest meeting in Senapati district, it was announced that the state government would present a proposal regarding the seven districts during the next tripartite meeting, which is set for April 2025.

This agreement was signed by several leaders, including UNC President Ng Lorho, UN general secretary Vareiyo Shatsang, All Naga Students’ Association President M Luikang Luckson, and others from the government.
