The air quality in Delhi has gotten worse, prompting the government to take action. On Wednesday, the air quality level hit a ‘very poor’ rating of 327. The air quality had been poor earlier in the week, with a score of 258 on Tuesday. To combat this rising pollution, the government has put in place GRAP Stage 3 restrictions.
Temperature in Delhi has also dropped recently, with readings as low as 6.6 degrees Celsius on Tuesday and 7.6 degrees Celsius on Wednesday morning. Because of the cold weather, many homeless people have started using night shelters for warmth. To assist them, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board has set up 235 tents across the city, including popular areas like AIIMS and Lodhi Road.
Under the new GRAP Stage 3 rules, non-essential construction work is banned, and schools for younger children (up to grade V) must switch to online or hybrid classes. Parents and students can choose online classes where possible. Additionally, certain cars are restricted: only BS-IV diesel and BS-III petrol vehicles can travel in Delhi and nearby areas, although people with disabilities are exempt. Non-essential diesel-operated trucks that do not meet newer standards are also banned.
