After Donald Trump became president again, a doctor is warning that his government’s decisions could let a dangerous illness enter the U.S. One of Trump’s first moves was to stop travel and communication at important health agencies, including the CDC, for 90 days. This means these agencies can’t share info with the World Health Organization (WHO) and can’t prepare for possible health threats.
Dr. Stephanie Psaki, a medical expert and sister of former press secretary Jen Psaki, is very concerned. She says Trump’s decisions could let harmful viruses like the Marburg virus, which is similar to Ebola and can kill up to 88% of those infected, come into the U.S. Right now, Tanzania is facing a Marburg outbreak, with many people sick and several deaths reported.
Dr. Psaki emphasizes that the best way to protect Americans from this virus, which causes severe bleeding, is to stop it before it reaches the U.S. She points out that there is no vaccine or treatment for Marburg, making early detection and action crucial.
She believes that Trump’s pause on CDC operations makes the U.S. less ready for new health dangers, similar to what happened with COVID-19. Dr. Psaki is worried and asks, “Who is making sure Americans are safe from Marburg right now?”
The WHO alerted health officials about the Marburg situation in Tanzania, indicating a serious risk. It’s important for health agencies to work together and respond quickly to keep everyone safe.
