India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) called in the acting high commissioner from Sri Lanka on Tuesday to express strong disapproval after an incident where five Indian fishermen were injured. This happened near Delft Island, where the Sri Lankan Navy reportedly fired on the fishermen. Two of the injured fishermen are in serious condition and are receiving medical care at Jaffna Teaching Hospital.
The MEA stated that using force against fishermen is completely unacceptable. The incident involved the Sri Lankan Navy trying to capture 13 Indian fishermen when the firing took place.
While three fishermen had minor injuries and got treatment, officials from the Indian consulate in Jaffna visited the injured to ensure they were okay and to offer support.
The acting high commissioner was summoned to express India’s strong protest, with the Indian High Commission in Colombo raising the issue with Sri Lanka’s foreign ministry. The Indian government has emphasized the need for treating fishermen issues kindly and with care. They stressed that any previous agreements between the two countries must be followed strictly in such matters.
