Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro criticized former US President Donald Trump for his attitude and policies towards Colombia. Their disagreement nearly sparked a trade war after Colombia agreed to accept migrant deportation flights from the US. In a post on social media, Petro expressed a wish to have a friendly discussion with Trump over a glass of whiskey, but he felt it was hard to communicate with someone who thinks he is “inferior.”

Petro highlighted how Trump’s attitude might harm their relationship, leading him to threaten new tariffs on Colombian goods. But after reevaluating, Colombia asked the US to treat migrants better.

Recently, the US backed off from imposing heavy tariffs, which could have hurt Colombia’s economy. These tariffs were set to rise to 25%, then 50% in a week, along with bans on Colombian officials.

Petro rejected Trump’s views, stating that they don’t scare him. He emphasized that Colombia doesn’t depend on the US anymore. He even suggested that if Trump tried to remove him from office, the entire region would respond together. Petro stated, “I shake hands with those who fight for freedom, not with people who treat others badly,” reminding everyone of the importance of respect and unity among people.
