Many Indian parents in the US are rushing to have their babies early due to President Trump’s new order that could end automatic US citizenship for children born to non-permanent residents. According to reports, some expecting mothers are having planned C-sections before the February 20 deadline.
Doctors like Dr. SD Rama from New Jersey have seen a rise in requests for early deliveries. One patient, who is seven months pregnant and is due in March, wanted to schedule her delivery soon to avoid any issues with citizenship.
This situation is concerning because babies born before the February deadline will automatically become US citizens, while those born afterward may not. Dr. SG Mukkala, an obstetrician in Texas, warns couples about the dangers of preterm births. These risks include issues like underdeveloped lungs, low birth weight, and other health complications.
Many Indian families have depended on birthright citizenship for security, especially as wait times for green cards can take years. One finance professional shared that if his wife gives birth after the deadline, their plans will be greatly affected, saying, “We sacrificed so much to come here, and now it feels like the door is closing on us.”
