Jakarta, Indonesia – On Thursday, Indonesia’s parliament decided to change the mining laws. This is to help the government grow its mineral processing industry faster. They also want to create rules for mining permits for religious groups and universities. President Prabowo Subianto is eager to speed up the development of this industry and has set up a special team to make a clear plan for it.

During a meeting, lawmakers agreed to start talking about the law changes. One big idea is to give some companies the first chance to mine in certain areas, especially if they agree to turn raw minerals into finished products and create jobs for local people.

The new rules will also allow religious groups and universities to mine certain ores, based on how big the mines are and whether these organizations can manage them well. They need to show how they will help local communities and education.

Last year, Indonesia allowed religious groups to manage mining resources to create an income for themselves. Some people criticized this move, saying it was a way to thank those groups for their political support, but the government disagreed.

Additionally, the parliament wants small mining areas, less than 2,500 hectares, to be reserved for small businesses to help improve local economies.
