In Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, a court in Beed, Maharashtra, has put Walmik Karad, a close aide of Minister Dhananjay Munde, in custody for 14 days. He was arrested in connection with the murder of sarpanch Santosh Deshmukh. Karad appeared before the special court via video link after the police’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) finished questioning him.

Deshmukh’s brother expressed to the media that none of the suspects should be granted bail because they created a feeling of fear in the community. The court allowed Karad to use a machine that helps him breathe while he sleeps, as he suffers from sleep apnea. He recently had a cough and fever but was stable after a hospital check-up.

Karad was arrested earlier this year under a tough law, called MCOCA, after being linked to an extortion case. Santosh Deshmukh, who served as the sarpanch of Massajog village, was kidnapped, hurt, and killed on December 9. Investigators believe Deshmukh tried to stop an extortion attempt aimed at an energy company. Reports state that Karad was in contact with the people who committed the crime. They believed Deshmukh was a barrier to taking ₹2 crore from a wind energy firm in the area.
