On his first official day as Secretary of State, Marco Rubio spoke with leaders from Japan, India, and Australia. Together, they warned China about taking unfair actions in Asia, especially at sea. This meeting took place right after President Donald Trump was sworn in. Trump has promised to stand up to China, but his approach is different from his past comments about allies in Europe.
Rubio and the leaders from the Quad, which includes Japan, India, and Australia, agreed to support a free and fair Indo-Pacific region. They want to make sure that countries follow the law and respect each other’s territory. They said, “We strongly oppose any actions that try to change things by force.”
The leaders are also planning a meeting in India this year, which will show Trump’s support for that country as a partner against China. Trump had a good relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his first term.
Rubio also talked about the importance of looking out for Taiwan, which China wants to control. He said that while countries should work together, it’s also normal for there to be conflicts. He believes that the U.S. should always put its security first.
As Rubio joined the State Department, some experienced diplomats left their jobs. He reassured his team that changes would happen but would not be harmful. He emphasized that the world is changing quickly, and the U.S. needs to keep pace.
