Chennai, Tamil Nadu, is expecting a big need for electricity this year—22,150 MW! That’s six percent more than last year. The Electricity Minister, V Senthil Balaji, shared this information during an Assembly meeting.
On May 2, 2024, the highest demand recorded in the state was 20,830 MW. Tamil Nadu also saw daily electricity use reach 454.32 MU on April 30, 2024. In Chennai, the maximum demand hit 4,769 MW, with daily consumption of 101.755 MU as of May 31, 2024.
When an opposition member, Senthil Kumar, complained about power cuts, the minister responded by pointing out that Tamil Nadu has one of the best records for power supply, providing electricity 99.97% of the time. He assured that if anyone in the state is having issues, help will be provided, and so far, 74,000 transformers have been replaced to improve service.
The state government also aims to tackle environmental issues. By 2030, they want 50% of their energy to come from renewable sources like solar and wind, and they plan to cut carbon emissions by 70%. Tamil Nadu is already doing well in renewable energy, ranking third in the country for total capacity and second for wind energy.
