Donald Trump is set to be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on Monday, January 20. This is his second time in the White House, and he has invited many world leaders to join him for the ceremony. Traditionally, presidential inaugurations are mostly local events, but Trump is changing that.
Leaders from different countries are making their way to Washington, D.C. to watch the inauguration.
Who’s Attending?
– Javier Milei: The President of Argentina has confirmed he will be there. Trump has praised Milei, saying he has the power to “make Argentina great again.” Milei even visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida last December.
– Giorgia Meloni: The Prime Minister of Italy is likely to attend if her schedule allows. She visited Mar-a-Lago after Trump’s first election and is considered a close ally.
– Daniel Noboa: The President of Ecuador sees Trump’s win as a win for all of Latin America. He is taking time off from his re-election campaign to attend.
– Nayib Bukele: The President of El Salvador hasn’t confirmed yet, but he is a friend of Trump Jr. and had invited him to his own inauguration.
– Mateusz Morawieck: The former Prime Minister of Poland will attend the ceremony, representing right-wing parties in Europe.
– Several other right-wing leaders from Europe, including Santiago Abascal from Spain and Eric Zemmour from France, will also be there.
Who Isn’t Attending?
– Narendra Modi: The Prime Minister of India was a friend of Trump but will not attend. Instead, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar will represent him.
– Xi Jinping: The President of China has been invited but is sending his deputy, Han Zheng, in his place.
– Viktor Orban: The Prime Minister of Hungary is close to Trump but cannot attend due to other commitments.
– Jair Bolsonaro: The former President of Brazil has been invited, but he cannot go because his passport is still being held by the Brazilian Supreme Court. His wife, Michelle, will attend instead.
– Keir Starmer: The UK Prime Minister was not invited, but the UK will send its ambassador. Instead, Nigel Farage will be there.
– Ursula von der Leyen: The head of the European Commission and many European leaders were not invited.
– Olaf Scholz: The Chancellor of Germany also did not receive an invitation, sending the German ambassador instead. However, a far-right party leader, Alice Weidel, from Germany has been invited.
– Emmanuel Macron: The President of France was not invited either, and France will be represented by its ambassador.
