Boris Becker, a six-time Grand Slam champion from Germany, is backing Novak Djokovic after Djokovic spoke out against a comment made by a sports journalist from the Australian broadcaster, Channel Nine. Djokovic felt insulted and hurt by these comments, which he believed mocked him and his Serbian fans. Becker, who was Djokovic’s coach from 2013 to 2016, questioned if the journalist would keep his job at the channel after what happened.
After winning his match against Jiri Lehecka, Djokovic didn’t do his usual interview on the court because he was upset. In a video he shared online, Djokovic explained that the broadcaster’s journalist made hurtful jokes about Serbian fans and did not apologize for it. “Since they didn’t say sorry, I won’t give any interviews to Channel Nine,” Djokovic stated.
Djokovic made it clear that he had no problem with Jim Courier, who was supposed to interview him. He said it was awkward to be in that situation.
The journalist, Tony Jones from Channel Nine, said he didn’t mean to offend and tried to be funny. He sang out loud, “Novak, he’s overrated” to Serbian fans, but later realized that he had crossed the line. He apologized publicly and also reached out directly to Djokovic. “I apologize if he felt disrespected,” Jones stated, acknowledging the impact of his words.
