When Donald Trump walks into the White House on Monday afternoon after his swearing-in, he will find over 100 executive orders on his desk. His team has prepared these orders so he can start his second term right away. Trump plans to take quick action to keep his promises.
Trump told NBC News that he will sign many executive actions on his first day. An executive order is like a rule made by the president that has the power of law, but it doesn’t need approval from Congress. Congress can’t cancel these orders, but they can be challenged in court.
Trump will be sworn in as the 47th President of the United States on January 20. He mentioned that his team has many documents ready for him to sign. One of his aides, Stephen Miller, said the orders will focus on five main topics:
1. Securing the Southern border
2. Mass deportation of undocumented immigrants
3. Stopping transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports
4. Lifting bans on energy production
5. Making government work better
Some of his executive orders may include pardoning supporters who were arrested for the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, four years ago. Trump, who is now 78, is also expected to roll back some policies set by former President Biden, including rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement and lifting restrictions on fossil fuel drilling.
Trump’s team is ready for a strong start to his presidency, and commentators say it will be an ambitious first day. An economist from The Heritage Foundation mentioned that all the planning done by Trump’s team makes it likely they’ll have everything ready to go immediately.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz and Congressman Jodey Arrington have introduced a bill to undo an executive order from Biden that stopped American energy exploration in large areas of the ocean. Trump may reverse this with his own order.
In December, Trump promised to put tariffs on imports from countries like China, Mexico, and Canada. On the first day, he aims to start a large deportation program for criminals, close the border, and ramp up oil drilling.
Politico reports that Trump’s message will be clear: the border is closed to illegal crossings, and people living in the U.S. without permission—especially those who’ve committed crimes—should be prepared for deportation. Axios said Trump is ready for a big first day with pardons for people from the January 6 riots, tightening the border, and rolling back many economic regulations. This first day will set the tone for his next four years in office.
