Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam recently highlighted how India is becoming a key player in the global economy. He believes that India is not just growing in power geopolitically but is also becoming stronger economically. During his two-day visit to Odisha, he said Singapore aims to work with India in many areas, especially in building a strong semiconductor industry and improving air travel between the two countries.
He mentioned that India’s large population and strong export capabilities make it a great partner. Both countries are focused on similar goals, especially in developing the semiconductor industry as discussed in the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable. Singapore is eager to help create new industrial parks in India, with Sembcorp exploring various locations for these developments.
Additionally, Shanmugaratnam pointed out that skill development is vital for India’s future, and Singapore wants to assist in creating better training programs. Both nations also prioritize sustainability, with India having abundant solar and wind energy resources. Singapore is excited to collaborate with India in producing green ammonia and building a green corridor connecting to Southeast Asia, which is an important yet long-term project.
Lastly, the President emphasized the importance of better air connectivity. He shared that during his discussions with Indian leaders, there was a strong desire to update the air service agreement, which hasn’t been revised in a decade. This update would bring economic benefits to both countries.
