Former Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has claimed that there were plans to kill her and her sister Sheikh Rehana when she lost her position. In a recent audio message on her party’s Facebook page, Hasina said they narrowly escaped death just 20 to 25 minutes apart.
Last August, a student-led movement forced Hasina out of power after many protests that led to more than 600 deaths. Hasina, who is now 76, fled to India, and a temporary government, led by Nobel Prize winner Muhammad Yunus, took over.
Sheikh Hasina talked about her past experiences, mentioning several times when people tried to kill her. She expressed that she feels it’s a blessing from Allah that she is still alive. “There have been so many attacks, but I believe there is a purpose for me,” she said. Even though she feels sad to be away from her country and home, she is grateful to be alive.
Hasina’s life has been under threat for years. One major attack happened in 2004, during a rally where 24 people died and more than 500 were hurt. She was injured too. Another attempt to kill her involved bombs found in 2000, just before she was supposed to speak at a rally.
