BUCHAREST – A Romanian court has decided to lift the house arrest of internet celebrity Andrew Tate. Instead of staying at home, he will now follow lighter rules while waiting for a criminal investigation to finish. Tate has been under house arrest since August when prosecutors started a second investigation against him, his brother Tristan, and four others. They are accused of serious crimes, including forming a criminal group, human trafficking, and money laundering. Tate and the others have denied any wrongdoing.
Previously, in December, a court decided not to try Tate in an earlier case, saying there were problems with the charges. This was a setback for Romania’s anti-organized crime unit. On Tuesday, judges allowed Tate to have more freedom during the new investigation. His team said this is a significant step, as he can now move around Romania but still has to follow certain rules. He must check in with the police regularly and cannot talk to other suspects or witnesses. Tate is also not allowed to leave Romania.
Both Tate brothers, who were kickboxers and hold dual U.S. and British citizenship, are facing serious charges. They also have a British arrest warrant and will be sent back to the UK for trial once their Romanian case is over.
