Delhi Police announced that they arrested a Class-12 student for sending bomb threats to more than 400 schools in the city. The investigations reveal that the student has connections to a group that supports a political party. This group has been speaking out against the execution of Afzal Guru, who was convicted for the 2001 Parliament attack.
The police faced difficulties in tracking the emails because the student used a virtual private network (VPN). Special Commissioner of Police, Madhup Tewari, mentioned at a press conference that this made it tricky to find where the threats came from. “We had to check if there was a chance that this was linked to terrorism,” Tewari said.
The police were able to identify the student after tracing emails sent on January 8. Since he is a minor, they took his laptop and phone to analyze them for evidence. “Our teams found the minor after checking the emails sent on January 8. Because he is underage, we took his devices for forensic examination,” Tewari added.
The investigation revealed that the student’s family is connected to an NGO. This organization, which the student’s father is part of, has been advocating for Afzal Guru and is also engaged with a political party, although the name of the party isn’t shared by the police.
“Our teams tracked down 400 threatening emails sent by the student. They also looked into the background of his father, who works with an NGO supporting the issues related to Afzal Guru and helping a political party,” Tewari explained.
The police are still looking into the situation to find out how involved the minor was and if there are links to bigger organizations. They are also checking if these threats could be connected to any terror activities
