NEW DELHI: India and Bangladesh are having some trouble over a border fence that India is building. Bangladesh is worried about this fence and how it affects their safety. On Monday, India called in Bangladesh’s top diplomat, Mohammad Nural Islam, to let him know that the fence and other security measures are all according to agreements they both made before.

This disagreement comes just after a big change in Bangladesh’s government, where a new leader, Muhammad Yunus, took over after former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina left last August.

India told Bangladesh that it has followed all the rules that were agreed upon regarding the border. They expressed hope that Bangladesh would work with them to handle problems like smuggling and other crimes that happen across the border.

Bangladesh’s officials have complained that India built the fence without proper talks, which goes against their agreements. India believes that it is right to build this fence because it helps keep smugglers and criminals away. So far, India has already fenced over 3,000 kilometers of the nearly 4,096-kilometer border with Bangladesh.

On another note, India’s army chief, General Upendra Dwivedi, spoke about how important it is for India and Bangladesh to work together as neighbors. He said that having any fights isn’t good for either country since they are strategic partners. He has been in touch with the Bangladeshi army chief, General Waker-uz-Zaman, even after the government change.

Despite some problems, the friendship between the Indian and Bangladeshi militaries is strong, and they are still cooperating on military matters. A joint military exercise was postponed, but they plan to hold it when things get better.
