The district administration of Lucknow has told petrol stations in Uttar Pradesh to stop giving fuel to people on two-wheelers, like bikes and scooters, unless they are wearing helmets. This new rule will start on January 26. The goal is to decrease the number of accidents that happen on the roads and save lives.
Lucknow’s district magistrate, Surya Pal Gangwar, issued this order to make sure everyone understands how important it is to wear helmets while riding. If you ride a two-wheeler, both the rider and the person sitting behind must wear helmets that meet safety standards. This is part of the Motor Vehicles Act, which aims to keep everyone safe on the road.
Petrol stations will also have to put up big signs explaining this new rule, and they have one week to do it. Additionally, they must check that their security cameras, or CCTVs, are working well to avoid any problems with customers.
In 2022, over 24,000 people died in road accidents in Uttar Pradesh, with many of those being riders without helmets. Lucknow alone saw 1,408 accidents, resulting in 643 deaths and nearly 1,000 injuries. Officials hope that by enforcing this helmet rule, they can prevent similar tragedies in the future.
