The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is expecting four crore (40 million) people to come for a sacred bath in the rivers Ganga, Yamuna, and Saraswati on January 13 and 14. To keep everyone safe, officials have set up a strong security plan with seven layers of protection. They think one crore (10 million) visitors will come on Paush Purnima (January 13) and three crore (30 million) on Makar Sankranti (January 14).
To manage the large crowds, the area has become a “no vehicle zone,” and roads leading to the Sangam will have traffic changes. There are also 2,751 CCTV cameras watching over the Mela area, with 328 using smart AI technology for better surveillance.
“To ensure everyone’s safety, we have a solid seven-tier security system,” said Bhanu Bhaskar, Additional Director General (Prayagraj Zone). This plan includes various security barriers and checkpoints. The city’s main sites, especially religious places, are under strict watch. There are now 57 temporary police stations and 15 extra checkpoints in the city and nearby areas.
“We’re using AI technology to help us keep watch,” Bhaskar added. The Maha Kumbh Police App is available for better policing. They are also using high-tech tools like AI cameras, anti-drone gadgets, and drones with tether lines to monitor the area closely.
Around 40,000 security personnel, including paramilitary teams, are on duty. The anti-drone system is operated by experts to prevent any flying threats. Overall, Prayagraj authorities are doing everything they can to make sure that Maha Kumbh 2025 happens safely and smoothly for the many pilgrims expected to attend.
