In a recent interview, Jake Sullivan, the White House national security adviser, said that President Joe Biden’s administration is making the United States the “undisputed heavyweight champion” of the world. He asked if people around the world really believe this, especially when it comes to our strength, economy, innovation, and ability to attract talent and investment. Sullivan mentioned that when Biden took office, some people thought China was leading, but now no one believes that.

Biden’s four years in office have been challenging. He has worked hard to rebuild relationships with other countries, especially in Europe, after former President Trump’s “America First” approach strained those ties. However, his presidency has also faced serious issues like the COVID-19 pandemic, a tricky withdrawal from Afghanistan, and support for Ukraine and Israel amid conflicts with Russia and Hamas.

Biden believes that his leadership has helped restore America’s reputation as a key global partner. Yet, some critics worry that Trump, if re-elected, could create a more chaotic foreign policy, especially concerning his strong support for Ukraine and strained relationships with countries like Canada and Greenland.

Daniel Fried, a former U.S. ambassador, believes that Trump could shape how Americans view Biden’s legacy in relation to Ukraine. He points out that even if Trump doesn’t bring about a good end to the Ukraine war, he might be seen as someone who did something positive, while Biden could be criticized for being hesitant.

In the Middle East, Biden’s administration has continued to support Israel by supplying arms, including a recent deal worth $8 billion, despite calls from pro-Palestinian activists for an arms embargo. Aaron David Miller, a former U.S. negotiator, says Biden’s approach has put Iran in a difficult position. However, he warns that Biden will face backlash over the destruction in Gaza, where many people have suffered from a lack of food, water, and shelter. Miller believes Biden may not have been strong enough to pressure Israel for better action.
